Overview

Elaine Jones’s new series of broody abstract paintings combine a dramatic use of colour and form, capturing the intensity of light, atmosphere and serenity in Svalbard’s unique environment. The Arctic provides changeable scenes of bright blue skies, moody silvery mist and cloud forms and, of course, 24-hour sunlight. Indeed the Arctic is an inspiring destination for both naturalists and artists, as it provides incredible wildlife against a beautiful backdrop of turquoise glaciers and drift ice floating on mirror-still waters.

Her paintings explore the relationship between colour and texture; large flat areas are combined with layers of paint thus creating the illusion of depth, light and space. Her compositions bring together the abstract and the representational by incorporating horizontal and vertical bands which echo the structure of a landscape or seascape.
